Northrop Grumman is currently seeking an Operational Technology Network Engineer level 3 or 4 (mid-career or senior) to support our Propulsion Systems business unit. This position will support the Propulsion Systems (PS) business unit with locations in Magna, Salt Lake, Clearfield and Promontory, UT; reporting to the Network Engineering group with responsibilities in Operational Technology (OT) network architecture with process control systems. This job supports Rocket Motor manufacturing processes at all locations.
Position Summary:Β
Operational Technology (OT) refers to the collection of hardware and software used to control physical devices. OT networks allow companies to control physical devices and monitor equipment at the spindle, machine, shift, or factory level. This real-time capability allows advanced software platforms to analyze data much faster than human operators could, and at a far higher degree of accuracy. These platforms are highly configurable and can work with user-defined configurations and parameters.
Information Technology (IT) refers to an extensive collection of data storage devices like servers and software, network hardware such as cables and switches, and communication devices and protocols. IT networks and IT devices work together to store, control, and deliver information, typically handling data for business applications.
Because OT devices are critical to safety and machine condition, theyβre very reliable and can operate around the clock for many years without failure or replacement. They may also be ruggedized to withstand heat, moisture, vibration, and other wear and tear that IT devices cannot handle. Also, OT devices/systems aren't updated nearly as often as IT devices/systems, so they are likely to have numerous software vulnerabilities. Accessing them may be difficult because they might be imbedded with the equipment, or they may even be controlled by vendors. In all cases, modifications to OT devices may be subject to a complex approvals process as any change (even a simple software update) can have numerous cascading effects on the industrial process.
The role of the OT Network Engineer troubleshoots problems, identifies solutions, and performs routine administration to ensure reliable network connectivity for critical control processes.
