The Sr. Systems Engineer will be responsible for assessing customer requirements and generating system specifications and design specifications for electronics products and systems. The products and systems may include but not be limited to embedded devices, sensors, cameras, networking, and user interfaces that enable advanced functionalities and performance. The Systems Engineer will also collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure the feasibility, reliability, and compatibility of the system designs and architectures.


Duties and Responsibilities



  • Lead the analysis of customer requirements and the generation of system specifications and design specifications for electronics products and systems.

  • Develop comprehensive system specifications for electronics products and systems, including embedded devices, sensors, cameras, networking, and user interfaces.

  • Create detailed design specifications that outline the architecture, components, and interfaces of the system.

  • Design and document communication protocols (Ethernet, CANbus, Serial) for integration with custom hardware.

  • Coordinate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure the feasibility, reliability, and compatibility of the system designs and architectures.

  • Manage and execute lab and field testing of the products and systems and document the test results.

  • Conduct training sessions for customers and internal teams on system operation and maintenance.


Qualifications and Competencies



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in relevant areas are a plus

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in systems engineering or a related field.

  • Proven track record of designing and developing complex embedded and electronic systems, sensors, cameras, networking, and user interfaces.

  • Experience in application architecture design and analysis

  • Knowledge of safety-critical systems and SIL (Safety Integrity Level) rated products is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g., MSHA, IECex, ATEX) preferred

  • Strong focus on understanding and meeting customer needs and requirements

  • Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and build effective relationships.

  • Innovative thinker with the ability to propose and implement innovative solutions to complex problems.

  • Capable of representing the company as a prime technical contact

  • Demonstrated use of tools for requirements management, project management, and system design and analysis


Working Conditions



  • Daily Job duties will consist of office, lab, and desk work with occasional field testing required.


    • Candidate may be required to work underground, but on an infrequent basis

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near large moving machinery

    • Customer operations may contain airborne particles and allergens

    • Matrix employees are furnished and required to wear safety gear such as hard hats, steel toe shoes, reflective clothing, earplugs, and safety glasses


  • Occasional travel and ability to work various shifts as required by customer
