Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a full-time Senior Embedded Systems Engineer.


 


Reporting to the Director of Hardware Engineering in our Aquaculture Intelligence division, the Senior Embedded Systems Engineer is responsible for designing and supporting embedded systems as part of the hardware engineering team. The candidate must be adept at the following:



  • Designing, developing, and testing embedded systems (hardware and firmware) as part of the product development process

  • Interfacing with other departments, such as Production and Customer Support, to answer technical questions, support existing products, and troubleshoot identified problems

  • Working with customer feedback to quickly pivot products towards new market opportunities

  • Analyzing sensor information to perform diagnostic analysis and make recommendations for future iterations of a product

  • Mentoring younger embedded engineers and EITs

  • Traveling on occasion (domestic and international)


 


Required Skills and Experience



  • Five to ten years of experience designing embedded systems

  • Experience with embedded operating systems such as Linux

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines

  • Demonstrate strong consultation, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to interact effectively with clients, partners and other internal departments

  • Flexibility to learn new skills and take on new tasks, including areas outside core area of expertise

  • Effective oral communications with strong technical writing skills


 


Education


Candidates are required to have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.


 


Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise



  • Possess a current membership or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers Nova Scotia

  • Familiarity developing firmware on low power microcontrollers such as the MSP430 or STM32

  • Knowledge of common embedded systems technologies, such as Bluetooth, GPS, cellular modules, Modbus, RTOS, etc.

  • Experience with communication protocol drivers and stacks (networking, 1553, UART, SPI, I2C, etc.)

  • Experience with schematic/PCB design software such as Altium, OrCAD, Mentor Graphics, or equivalent

  • A knowledge of testing embedded systems, both for QA and standard qualifications (ex CE, IEC)

  • Expertise using programming languages such as C, C++, Python, and Typescript

  • Data analysis skills on large data sets, including machine learning

  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) techniques

  • An understanding of digital signal processing and underwater acoustics would be an asset

  • Experience working in the Ocean Technology sector
