Description

Innovation at its Best: Join our Forward-Thinking Company

At CableLabs we wake up every day to invent the future. CableLabs is a global, award-winning innovation and R&D lab dedicated to keeping people connected by building and orchestrating emergent technology and igniting co-innovation today for the broadband of tomorrow.

The RF System & Software Architect position resides in the Wireless Technologies department at CableLabs. This department conducts research and development in new and emerging wireless technologies that include 4G, 5G, 6G, Wi-Fi, and spectrum sharing strategies. Our team plays a crucial role in developing industry standards and technical regulatory policy for mobile and Wi-Fi network design, deployment, service delivery and operations in licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

Why This Role Is Exciting

The Wireless Technologies group at CableLabs is seeking candidates for an RF System & Software Architect position. In this role, you will be involved in spectrum simulations, spectrum-sharing studies, developing dynamic spectrum sharing solutions and interacting with operators, regulations, and standard bodies. The project will likely make direct impacts in the industry as well as generating papers with solid contributions.

What You’ll Do

The recently released US National Spectrum Strategy (NSS) identifies over 2500 MHz of spectrum to be shared with occupants that consist of federal, non-federal, and military wireless systems. This spectrum spans five bands covering mid-band (3 GHz, 5 GHz, 7 GHz, and 18 GHz) and mmWave bands (37 GHz) that will be used to address the increasing demand for commercial mobile user traffic and applications to provide mobile network relief and deliver new services and improved quality of experience. These bands have been targeted since they are underutilized and fit the global band allocation for mobile networks.

The research and development of coexistence and spectrum sharing solutions between multiple wireless networks is required to fully utilize these targeted bands. This requires complex interference simulation, analysis of wireless technologies, lab and field measurements, and contributions to industry Working Groups (FCC, NTIA, DoD) to develop and promote solutions.

The role of the RF system & software architect will consist of the following tasks, with primary focus on 3 GHz and 7 GHz bands:

  • Conduct interference simulations between commercial wireless networks (e.g. Wi-Fi, 5G, etc) and incumbent wireless systems (e.g. radars, microwave systems, etc) using MATLAB, Python and similar software tools

  • Research coexistence algorithms and interference mitigation techniques.

  • Research wireless communication systems RF and PHY layer designs that impacts coexistence with other radio systems.

  • Research and assessment of wireless systems and industry standards (3GPP, IEEE, GSMA, FCC, etc) required for simulation

  • Document and write the necessary papers or technical reports on research outcomes for members and Industry Working Groups

  • Participate in industry Working Groups to represent CableLabs interests

  • Participate in government and DoD activities to represent the Cable Industry

  • Create test plans, field and lab measurements to validate coexistence and spectrum sharing solutions which will include using a spectrum analyzer, network vector analyzer, and vector signal generator

  • Develop Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) solutions and proof-of-concepts

Qualifications

What Is a Must Have

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field with an emphasis on Telecommunications

  • Advanced project experience in C/C++, Python and MATLAB code programming.

  • Knowledge of RF interference analysis and mitigation

  • Hands-on and project knowledge of 3GPP, IEEE, GSMA, FCC industry standards

  • Comprehensive knowledge of wireless communications, radio propagation, antenna theory, and RF principles.

  • 5+ years of experience in mobile network design, deployment and operations work for a mobile network operator or vendor

  • 5+ years of experience leading wireless projects

  • Ability to perform and deliver, individually or collaboratively, with minimum supervision

  • Hands-on lab experience with spectrum analyzer, network vector analyzer, and vector signal generator

  • Excellent analytical skills and critical thinking skills.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Self-motivated and willingness to learn.

  • Experience in client-facing and vendor management roles

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

What Will Set You Apart

  • Experience with NS3 a plus.

  • Experience and working knowledge of 3GPP standards related to interference, coexistence, propagation models and 5G network design

  • Knowledge of regulatory spectrum policy and standard bodies spectrum-related requirements.

  • Knowledge of 5G NR, 802.11, or satellite communication system physical layer design.

  • Knowledge of propagation, terrain and clutter path loss models.
