MicroHealth is seeking a Network Engineer IV to support our client and team. As a Network Engineer supporting the Defense Health Agency (DHA) designated to support requirements that cross all network activities. They will be the subject matter expert in network technologies and strategy for Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), and Wide Area Network (WAN) at the Defense Health Headquarters (DHHQ) in Fort Sam Houston, TX.

**This is a Planned Position.

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Design, test, upgrade, and integrate information networks (LAN, WLAN, WAN, intranets, extranets)
  2. Document engineering processes for network build, configuration, testing, and deployment
  3. Coordinate network changes with administrators and stakeholders
  4. Implement security measures for new and existing networks
  5. Perform network modeling, analysis, and planning
  6. Evaluate and recommend new network technologies
  7. Assist with complex troubleshooting and vendor coordination
  8. Provide operational and administrative support for lab and production networks

Essential Functions:
  • Oversees and participates in the design, testing, upgrade and integration of new or existing information networks, such as local area networks (LAN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), Voice over IP (VoIP), intranets, extranets, and other communications networks.
  • Coordinates with architecture and evaluate new and emerging network technologies and make recommendations for selection of these products
  • Functions as a technical expert across multiple project assignments
  • Coordinates changes such as implementation of new networks, upgrades or version increments to existing networks with network administrators and stakeholders
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Provide day-to-day operational and administrative support for deployed networks in both lab and production environments
  • Document all stages of the engineering process, including build, configuration, testing, and deployment of networks.
Key Skills and Tasks:
  1. WLAN Support:
    • Manage wireless infrastructure (access points, controllers)
    • Conduct wireless surveys and optimize access point placement
    • Implement 802.1X authentication and manage systems like Cisco ISE
    • Provide power over Ethernet (PoE) for network devices
    • Create network diagrams and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  2. LAN Support:
    • Configure and manage switches, VLANs, and trunking
    • Implement point-to-point traffic flows and Layer 2/3 networking
    • Perform software upgrades for cybersecurity compliance
    • Install and troubleshoot VOIP phones
    • Develop bills of materials (BOMs) for projects
  3. Cable Management:
    • Install, organize, label, and maintain structured cabling systems
    • Comply with industry standards (TIA/EIA) and local regulations
    • Perform fiber splicing and termination
    • Use network testing equipment (e.g., OTDR)
    • Develop BOMs for cable plant work orders
  4. General Responsibilities:
    • Minimize network downtime and coordinate maintenance
    • Troubleshoot and resolve network issues
    • Create technical documentation (SOPs, diagrams, port/protocol docs)
    • Lead projects and coordinate with other technical staff
    • Stay current with emerging network technologies

Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Master’s Degree and/or equivalency
    • Cisco Identity Service Engine (ISE) training and four (4) years of practical experience in a production environment.
    • Ten (10) years of experience supporting LAN and WLAN activities.
    • Five (5) years or more experience in a major hospital supporting more than 100+ beds environment.
    • Five (5) years of experience supporting a military production network.
    • Designing and deploying a wireless network consisting of 1300+ wireless access points (WAPs).
Required Certifications:
  • Commercial (baseline) certificates: One form of a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) level certification.
  • IAT II: CompTIA Security+

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
