The Opportunity

The University of Central Florida’s (UCF’s) Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) is conducting a search for multiple research software architecture positions. Each position will have responsibilities for the design, development, and delivery of new research software architectures that support cutting-edge simulation and training technologies research aligned to one of IST’s core competency areas. Ideal candidates will have an extensive background leading complex and enterprise-level software development efforts. Additional expertise with advanced modeling and simulation, large scale visualization and immersive technologies, or real-time computational simulation development is also desirable. These are full-time, 12-month, non-tenure earning positions supported by contracts and grants. 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of software reference architectures and the generation of software requirements specifications for a wide range of advanced systems and processes.

  • Identify and implement processes and tools to simplify and standardize software application development workflows.

  • Plan and oversee the software development lifecycle.

    • Translate software architectures and requirements into readable, maintainable, and sustainable prototype software code.

    • Test, modify, and assist with technical documentation of the resulting prototype code.

  • Ensure compliance with software security requirements at all stages of the research software development process.

  • Prepare prototype code for delivery to and deployment by applied research sponsors.

  • Work as a member of a cross-functional interdisciplinary team to accommodate the incorporation of advanced AI models and algorithms into digital twin software architectures.   

  • Support proposal writing, client deliverables, and research papers.

  • Support opportunity development activities, including events, meetings, and tours with current and potential future project stakeholders and partners.

    • Develop content for prototype demonstrations of IST’s capabilities.

  • Design creative visualization, immersive, and computational approaches to meet research and project objectives in collaboration with IST faculty, researchers, and students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in software engineering or a related field from an accredited institution and three years of related professional experience; or a bachelor’s degree in software engineering or related field and five years of related professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of back-end and front-end programming languages such as Java, Java Script, .NET, Python, C++, and C#.

  • Experience or education in designing, developing, and implementing advanced software architectures and simulations.

  • Knowledge of web technologies including SPAs and RESTful Services.

  • Knowledge of SQL.

  • Experience with current software development and software security best practices such as Agile and DevSecOps.

  • Knowledge of advanced simulation techniques that leverage AI and ML.

  • Experience developing APIs and interactive applications in multi-GPU environments.
